The exhibition brings together paintings from ten different Historic New England house museums as well as from collections storage. The paintings date from 1734 to 2018 and offer a great opportunity to compare and contrast paintings never before seen together.

The exhibition explores what it is about New England’s architecture, landscapes, and people that give the region its unique character. Discover formal portraits by well-known artists, pictures of people at work and at home, rural and urban landscapes, interiors that reflect a designer’s eye for color or a family’s affection for their ancestral home, coastal and mountain images, and atmospheric views of places New Englanders experienced abroad.

Artful Stories: Paintings from Historic New England is curated by Peter Trippi, editor-in-chief of Fine Art Connoisseur, and Nancy Carlisle, senior curator of collections at Historic New England. They reviewed hundreds of paintings in the collection before narrowing the list down to these “top hits” for you to enjoy.

We welcome you to come in and explore Artful Stories

In addition to traditionally mounted artwork, digital kiosks in the exhibition galleries let you explore more. Artful Stories is on display Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, through October 31, 2021, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The experience is self-guided with capacity restrictions.
