Update Our ticketing, donations, and membership sales portal is down for scheduled maintenance on the afternoon of 4/11.
The project includes cleaning and conserving the extensive wood paneling and wood furniture, repairing plaster, installing a new period-appropriate carpet and chandelier, and conserving the fireplace’s distinctive decorative tiles and iron work. We are also repainting the wood floor, ceiling, and walls, and installing reproduction curtains, window shades, and other textiles.
The library was part of alterations made by Ella and Arthur Lyman to modernize and enlarge the house, which was originally built in 1793. These changes brought a fashionable Queen Anne style to both the interior and exterior. The dark paneled woodwork in the library and the William De Morgan fireplace tiles reflect that popular design aesthetic.
The Community Preservation Act grant helps preserve and enhance all the character-defining features of this room. Lyman descendants fondly remember the room as a space for the whole family. Today the library is enjoyed by visitors touring the house as well as guests of weddings and other functions at the Lyman Estate.
