Historic New England honors authors, collectors, and organizations who save and share our region’s past

Our awards programs honor these individuals and organizations for making the stories of life in New England over four centuries accessible to a wide range of audiences. They represent all six New England states and countless lenses through which to examine the region’s past.

About Our Award Programs

• The Historic New England Book Prize is awarded annually to a book that advances the understanding of life in New England from the past to today by examining its architecture, landscape, and material culture. This also includes works in the decorative arts, archaeology, historic preservation, the history of photography, and other related subjects.
• The Edward F. Gerber Urban Preservation Fund is awarded annually to support the preservation of private historic homes in key urban Connecticut centers. This fund helps to build a powerful network of historic preservation and community stakeholders by providing critical support to historic residential property owners in Connecticut.
• The Prize for Collecting Works on Paper is awarded annually to a collector or dealer who has assembled or helped save a significant collection of historic material related to New England or to the nation as a whole.
• The Herbert and Louise Whitney Fund Community Preservation Grant Program, administered by Historic New England, provides grants of $1,250 each to one small to mid-sized heritage organization in each of the six New England states.
