Historic New England protects H.H. Richardson-designed Ames Gate Lodge

Historic New England, in partnership with The Trustees of Reservations, recently finalized an agreement to protect 15.6 acres of the historic and scenic Langwater property, owned by the Oliver F. Ames family, in Easton, Massachusetts. This includes the historic Ames Gate Lodge designed by the prominent architect Henry Hobson Richardson and constructed in 1880-1881, which, along with 2.6 surrounding acres on Elm Street, will be protected through a preservation easement as part of Historic New England’s Stewardship Easement Program.

Meanwhile The Trustees will hold a conservation restriction on additional open space on the Langwater Estate, limiting development and protecting the scenic quality of the land on both sides of Langwater Pond. The Trustees also recently acquired the neighboring Governor Ames property from Elizabeth Ames and the David Ames family as a community park to be owned and managed by The Trustees.
