This award, which must be matched 100 percent, will fund a Historic New England Preservation and Resiliency project at Hamilton House. The project focuses on replacing the roof, conserving windows, repointing chimneys and the foundation, and repairing and painting the cladding, trim, and exterior ornamental features.
By securing the exterior of the building, Historic New England is preserving important architectural details and precluding damage to the interior finishes and the collections housed in the building, while ensuring the preservation of this National Historic Landmark for decades to come. This project also presents Historic New England an opportunity to offer special programs about its climate change initiative and share information on best practices for protecting other heritage buildings in the region.
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970, the property’s history spans several eras, from the late eighteenth century to early twentieth century. Today Hamilton House reflects the occupancy of Emily Tyson and her stepdaughter, Elise Tyson Vaughan, who saved and restored the property and used it as a summer retreat. It is one of the region’s quintessential Colonial Revival-style country estates.
Hamilton House has been a museum for more than seventy years. Each year, it welcomes thousands of visitors for house tours, public events, and school programs. The garden and landscapes are also favorite spots. Visitors are invited to enjoy the grounds from dawn to dusk.
The Save America’s Treasures program is highly competitive. The grant to Hamilton House was one of only forty-two grants awarded nationwide.

The Save America’s Treasures (SAT) grant program was established in 1998 and first awarded grants in 1999 to help preserve nationally significant historic properties and collections that convey the nation’s rich heritage to future generations. The SAT program is administered by the National Park Service (NPS) in cooperation with its partners, Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
