Inside the Collections Care Project: A decanter just in time for the holiday season

Dec 23, 2014

The holidays are upon us. As we finish up holiday shopping and preparation of holiday treats, it is time to take out the fancy glassware.

At Historic New England, the Collections Care Project team is making its way through our collection, photographing and updating records. This week, we feature a beautiful decanter with matching glasses. The glassware has etched decoration with tiny points of glass affixed to the elaborate design and would have been a charming addition to any festive family gathering.

This lovely set was a gift to the collection from Mrs. Harriet Appleton Curtis, sister of Historic New England’s founder, William Sumner Appleton. She and her husband, Mr. Greely Stevenson Curtis, a Civil War veteran, donated many wonderful pieces to the collection.

These pieces are a reminder to break out the good serving ware, perhaps have a cocktail or two, and enjoy the time gathering with family and friends. Cheers to the New Year!

In this season of giving, please consider donating to the Collections and Conservation Fund to help us continue the preservation work Appleton began.

Visit Collections Access for newly available images as we work our way through the collection. Have a safe and happy holiday season!
